2021 Sustainability Plan

The City of Durango is in the process of creating a new Community Sustainability Plan.

In May 2020, a Sustainability Working Group comprised of representatives from local stakeholder organizations and members of existing Boards and Commissions was formed to guide the Sustainability Plan process. The Working Group has developed a draft vision, sectors, strategies and actions for inclusion in the plan.

Vision: Durango is a community working toward carbon neutrality while preserving our natural environment and conserving resources in a manner that improves quality of life for all residents and maintains Durango's unique character for the benefit of present and future generations.

Overarching Goals (Draft)

  • Prepare Durango to be more resilient to climate change impacts
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase renewable electricity generation in line with goals adopted by City Council in 2019

80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 from 2016 levels, with an interim goal of a 30% reduction by 2030

100% renewable electricity by 2050, with in interim goal of 50% by 2030

  • Address climate change and pursue environmental, social and economic sustainability in a manner that ensure that the costs and benefits of action are equitably distributed.

2015 Municipal Sustainability Action Plan

The City of Durango Municipal Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) was adopted in 2015, setting out the City's commitment to:

Improving the quality of life for the citizens of our community by systematically, creatively and thoughtfully utilizing environmental, human and economic resources in a manner that maintains the unique character of our community for the benefit of present and future generations.

The SAP serves as an umbrella document for the organization-wide integration of sustainability, and establishes actions in ten overarching objective areas:
