Library Card Requirements
Library Cards
Residents who regularly reside in La Plata County, including those who own property in the County but may not live here year-round, may be issued a library card. Before a card can be issued, each individual (or a juvenile’s parent or guardian) needs to show the following:
Valid Photo Identification (not expired) may include:
- Driver’s license
- Colorado ID card (issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles)
- Passport
- U.S. military ID
- Other photo ID that lists a birth date
- Matricula Consular card (address on the card cannot be used as proof of a local address)
- High School/Middle School photo ID – Animas, Bayfield, Durango, or Ignacio high schools/middle schools, or Colorado Timberline Academy
- Fort Lewis College ID, validated for the current semester
In addition, the following non-photo identification forms are also acceptable:
- Medicare or Medicaid card
- Certified copy of birth certificate
- Certified documentation of naturalization
Current proof of residential street address (no PO boxes), may include:
- Current driver’s license
- Current Colorado ID card
- Personal checks imprinted with address
- Postmarked mail
- Utility bills, orders, or receipts
- Rent receipts or lease with a printed address
- Property description, with the owner’s name, from a title or insurance company
- Successful parcel search in La Plata County Assessor’s website
- Parent’s library card for a juvenile registration
- High School/Middle School ID card – no proof of physical address is needed
- Fort Lewis College and Pueblo Community College students – no proof of address needed, but must show current school ID
Courtesy Library Cards can be issued to Individuals who do not qualify for a Resident Card. This includes patrons who do not have a physical address and those who are visiting Durango for an extended stay.
The individual needs to present:
- A photo ID
- At least one of the following methods of contact:
- Mailing address
Adults with children must show the above in order for the child to receive a card.
